Are your 1000V insulating gloves still safe today?

1000V Class 0 insulating gloves

Class-0 insulating gloves rated for 1000V (ASTM D120) require periodic dielectric retesting — every 6 months for in-service pairs per OSHA 1910.137. But between formal retests, every shift starts with a self-check. Here is the protocol our QC team teaches new electricians.

Step 1 — Visual

Hold the glove up to a light source. Inspect both surfaces for cuts, embedded debris, ozone cracking (web-like patterns), discoloration, or any chemical contamination. Pay extra attention to the crotch between thumb and index finger.

Step 2 — Air test

Roll the cuff toward the fingertips, trapping air. Squeeze. Listen and watch for any leak — a hole the size of a pinprick will hiss.

Step 3 — Cuff date

Each glove ships stamped with an in-service date. If you are past the 6-month retest interval, the glove is out of service until lab retest, regardless of how it looks.

When to send back vs trash

Visible damage on a 1000V Class 0 glove means trash. Past-date but undamaged: send to a certified electrical PPE lab for retest (about $8/pair). Never re-stamp a date yourself.
